The show aired from September 1998 to February 2014, an impressive 16-year run. It was created by three British TV executives—David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, and Steven Knight—and it follows a simple format. Contestants answer a series of multiple-choice questions with increasing difficulty to win cash prizes, ranging from £100 to £1,000,000.

Approximately 160 countries adopted their own versions of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? game. At first, subsequent versions were required to closely resemble the UK original, especially in of the host’s attire, music, and set design.
